A commissioned reader is a lay person truly suited to, carefully prepared for, and duly commissioned by temporary deputation to carry out the ministry of proclaiming in the liturgical assembly “the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel . . . (and who in the absence of the Deacon) may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and, in the absence of a Psalmist, recite the Psalm between the readings” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal Third Typical Edition, 99).
