A commissioned extraordinary minister of Holy Communion is a lay person truly suited to, carefully prepared for, and duly commissioned by temporary deputation to carry out – in the absence of ordinary ministers (Bishop, Priest, or Deacon) or an instituted Acolyte – the ministry of distributing Holy Communion at Mass or other liturgical functions, bringing Holy Communion to the infirm or Viaticum to the dying, and publicly exposing and reposing the Blessed Sacrament for the adoration of the faithful.
